چکیده
The amphibious snail Oncomelania hupensis(O. hupensis) is the only intermediate host of Schistosomiasis japonica, which is a parasitic disease of considerable public health and economic significance. The survival of O. hupensis is governed by climatic and environmental factors, including vegetation, temperature, soil type and water level, etc. In this study, the environmental factors were derived from Landsat TM remote sensing image, and the relationship between environmental factors and the density of O. hupensis was analyzed by a multiple linear regression model. Although stepwise regression demonstrated that O. hupensis densities of live snails related significantly to the modified soil adjusted vegetation index (MSAVI), wetness index and land surface temperature (LST), the low correlation coefficient (0.3619) indicated that some important factors related to the abundance of snail had not yet been taken into account in the multiple linear regression model. Then, the great spatial analysis of the Geographic Information System (GIS) was used as a new tool to study the relationship between the distribution of O. hupensis and the surveillance of O. hupensis habitas. Spatial analysis of the regression residual was investigated by the semi-variogram method, and the spatial variation of O. hupensis density attributed to the spatial autocorrelation was estimated by ordinary kriging. Therefore, remote sensing and spatial analysis were both employed to predict the distribution of O. hupensis. Following this approach, O. hupensis in Dongting Lake region, China was predicted and the prediction results are validated with field data. The prediction results indeed improved considerably.

Thanks to Spatial Information Technologies (SITs) such as Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) that are being quickly developed and updated, SITs are being used more widely in the public health field. The use of SITs to study the characteristics of the temporal and spatial distribution of Schistosoma japonicum and to assess the risk of infection provides methods for the...
متن کاملIdentification of Potential High-Risk Habitats within the Transmission Reach of Oncomelania hupensis after Floods Based on SAR Techniques in a Plane Region in China
Schistosomiasis japonica is an infectious disease caused by Schistosoma japonicum, and it remains endemic in China. Flooding is the main hazard factor, as it causes the spread of Oncomelania hupensis, the only intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum, thereby triggering schistosomiasis outbreaks. Based on multi-source real-time remote sensing data, we used remote sensing (RS) technology, espe...
متن کاملThree Gorges Dam: Impact of Water Level Changes on the Density of Schistosome-Transmitting Snail Oncomelania hupensis in Dongting Lake Area, China
BACKGROUND Schistosomiasis remains an important public health issue in China and worldwide. Oncomelania hupensis is the unique intermediate host of schistosoma japonicum, and its change influences the distribution of S. japonica. The Three Gorges Dam (TGD) has substantially changed the ecology and environment in the Dongting Lake region. This study investigated the impact of water level and ele...
متن کاملRemote sensing for predicting potential habitats of Oncomelania hupensis in Hongze, Baima and Gaoyou lakes in Jiangsu province, China.
Political and health sector reforms, along with demographic, environmental and socio-economic transformations in the face of global warming, could cause the re-emergence of schistosomiasis in areas where transmission has been successfully interrupted and its emergence in previously non-endemic areas in China. In the present study, we used geographic information systems and remote sensing techni...
